September is mathematically the best month for a seaside trip: the sea holds the heat it gathered all summer, while the beaches empty on 1 September and prices head down. This article is not vibes but numbers – our own climate data, documented price patterns and the actual dates seasonal transport stops running.

Why September

Schools start almost everywhere at once. Czech and Polish holidays end on 31 August, French pupils are back on 1 September, and most German federal states are in school within the first week of September. The exceptions are Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, where holidays run until mid-September – which is why the Adriatic and northern Italy only get properly quiet in the second half of the month.

Meanwhile the sea is at its warmest in late summer. The Mediterranean peaks in August and early September and only cools noticeably in the second half of the month (long-term Copernicus Marine Service measurements).

Where the sea is warmest in September

The table is computed from our climate data (Open-Meteo, 8-year average) and recomputed daily – these are not brochure numbers:

What prices do

Nobody can predict this September's exact prices, but the seasonal pattern repeats every year and is well documented:

  • Flights: according to KAYAK's analysis (2025 data, German market), September and October flights come out on average 8% cheaper than July and August; for individual destinations the gap is often much larger.
  • Accommodation and car rentals: Holidu's comparison of peak season with the second half of September showed accommodation prices dropping 31% in Croatia, 26% in Italy and 23% in Spain; car rentals fell even more.

Treat this as a recurring pattern, not a promise – the calculator computes exact numbers for your dates from live prices.

When seasonal transport stops

Here September works against you: some summer routes end. Per the operators' official 2026 timetables:

| Route | Runs until | |---|---| | Moby Genoa–Bastia (Corsica) | 28 Sep 2026 | | Moby Livorno–Bastia (Corsica) | 30 Sep 2026 | | Jadrolinija – summer timetable (Croatia) | 30 Sep 2026 | | SNAV Ancona–Split/Hvar/Dubrovnik | 4 Oct 2026 | | Main Sardinia routes (Livorno–Olbia, Civitavecchia–Olbia) | year-round |

For flights, the summer schedule officially runs until 25 October 2026 – but beware: individual low-cost seasonal routes can end earlier and the exact last flights are only published during the season. Book your late-September return flight now rather than assuming "something will fly".

One thing for your calendar

A nationwide general strike is announced in Italy for 25–26 September 2026, potentially affecting trains, flights and public transport. Italian strikes are routinely cancelled or moved – if you travel on those dates, check the official portal scioperi.mit.gov.it before you go.

How we know

Sea and air temperatures are computed from Open-Meteo data (8-year average) by the same pipeline that powers all of Kamletos; the table above is recomputed daily. Price patterns and transport dates come from public analyses and official timetables – the full source list is below the article. For your specific September dates, the calculator runs on live flight and ferry prices.
